Color Calibration for the iPad Using a Spyder

by Aaron Hockley on May 25, 2011

This news struck me as a (welcome) surprise. You can now use a Spyder color calibration device to create a custom calibration profile for an iPad.

DataColor just released a free iPad app called SpyderGallery that allows one to use a Spyder calibration device to create a custom color profile for an iPad. After creating a custom profile for the device, the SpyderGallery app allows for photos to be displayed with a custom color profile on the iPad.

Setup and calibration involves both the iPad app along with a desktop (Mac or Windows) application since the iPad doesn’t support USB devices directly.

I haven’t had a chance to try this out with my Spyder 3 Pro but I look forward to the days of better-calibrated devices. Unfortunately the calibration will only apply in the SpyderGallery app; photos in other iPad photo/portfolio apps won’t be calibrated. Nonetheless this is a great development.
