My Instagram / Emily Litella Moment

by Aaron Hockley on April 27, 2011

When Instagram debuted and gained some traction, I looked at it with a skeptical eye. The social aspects were intriguing but I couldn’t help but blurt out things like “gah, it’s cropping all your photos” and “zoinks, you so over-filtered that” and “kaplooey, you need to stop beginning sentences like that!”

Then, for several months, I pretty much ignored Instagram. I’d occasionally click a link as I saw one in my Twitter stream, but that was about it.

About a month ago, something hit me and I’m not sure why I hadn’t figured it out before. While Instapaper is quite limited and restricted in how one can create and share photos, that limitation can be a creative force. We’re in a high-tech digital camera world, but some photographers enjoy going out with a Holga or Polaroid camera to see what results they can produce given the equipment they work with.

It’s a creative outlet. Trying it out won’t hurt anyone. As Emily Litella would’ve said… oh, that’s different. Never mind.

If you’d like, you can now follow me on Instagram. Photos should start appearing there today. My username is aaronhockley.

Glad you had the epiphany :) You can use any app you like to edit your photo, but as noted the square format isnt’ for everyone. It does grow on you. Instagram has the Social Media and community connectivity element down and this by far puts it in a strong position compared to other apps. See you on IG!
