Better Mobile Websites: WP Touch Pro

by Aaron Hockley on March 2, 2011

Unless you’ve been hiding somewhere, you know that mobile connectivity is big. iPhones, Android devices, and iPads are amongst some of the ways that your clients (current and future) are going to try to connect with you; is your website mobile-friendly?

Many photographers are now using websites and blogs powered by WordPress; I recently evaluated a popular plugin that turns a WordPress website in a mobile-friendly one. WP Touch Pro presents a mobile-friendly view on any touchscreen mobile device such as the iPhone, iPad, or Android phones. If you’d like to see the interface it presents, you can view this website from your mobile device.

In addition to the mobile phone interface that’s available via the free version of WP Touch, the pro version (currently $39 for one site) adds a lot of additional features including a nice iPad interface including custom menus and branding. Here’s how this site looks in the iPad view:

That’s definitely a lot better than forcing mobile visitors to attempt using your standard website via their mobile browser. At first I wondered if it would be worth the $39 for a nice iPad interface and then I had one significant thought: who has iPads? It’s generally forward-thinking folks who are in a good economic situation. Sounds like the type of folks I’d like to have as photography clients.

If your website is based on WordPress, the WP Touch Pro plugin is a great way to reach the crucial mobile audience.

Just downloaded it and very impressed, but no where can I find out how to ‘present’ it as a mobile option on my website.  What is the URL of my new mobile version?  How can I put an ad/notice on my site for the mobile version - just give the info and then they simply put my URL into the device?

I keep thinking I should have a new URL for the mobile version…  please clarify!

There’s no special URL to the mobile version. With the plugin activated, when a visitor hits your site it will detect whether they’re coming from a touchscreen phone (iPhone, Android, etc) and if they are it will present the touch interface.
