Top 10 Camera & Photo Bestsellers – March 2011

It’s March first; therefore it’s time for my monthly look at the top-selling camera and photo items as measured by Amazon.com.

One notable thing about this month’s bestseller list is that (for the first time in memory) Panasonic is completely absent from the list.

1. Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera – The S95 is probably the most popular pocket-sized camera amongst pro photographers and for good reason. It’s dropped about $30 in price this month and it’s always the camera I recommend for folks looking for a great small compact camera. Great image quality and features.
2. Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera – At just over $100, Canon’s SD1300IS is currently a good choice for someone looking for a small, cheap compact camera if they don’t need the better features of the S95.
3. Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens – Nikon’s D3100 is a good “first DSLR” at an affordable price. Pros will opt for something with more features but for someone just getting started this is a good option.
4. Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera – Kodak’s Zi8 offers great HD video in a small package, with the additional useful feature of an external microphone input which means you’ll be able to record higher-quality audio. This is the first time that the Zi8 has ranked higher than the Flip since I started tracking sales.
5. Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Black, 8 GB – The Flip UltraHD has long been the standard for a pocket HD video camera. It offers high-def video recording (up to two hours) in a simple to use package which is why it remains on the bestseller list month after month.
6. Canon PowerShot SX30IS Digital Camera – a nice sub-$200 point and shoot that features a big rear display along with a 12X optical zoom to get up close without having to get too close. My wife enjoys her camera that has a similar form factor and large zoom – it’s not a shocker that a high-quality Canon camera like this is selling well.
7. Canon PowerShot SD1300IS Digital Camera – a nice small compact camera… and it’s blue!
8. Canon G12 10MP Digital Camera – Canon’s G12 is a bit bigger than the S95 but offers similar features and is also quite popular with pro photographers that need a carryaround camera. It’ll fit into a jacket pocket and offers great image quality including RAW file support.
9. Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera – Another popular pocket video camera – this time in the waterproof variety. Seems like it would be a good choice for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding.
