It’s been about nine months since I got my iPad and it’s been a great ride using it as a tool for photography. Just before Christmas I was contacted by the creators of a new iPad app called piRAWnha that allows for RAW image processing on the iPad.
It’s pretty darn cool. Whereas other iPad photo editing apps (including my favorite, Photogene) can only operate on JPGs, piRAWnha lets you do true RAW conversions including common processing such as white balance, exposure, and color adjustments. Here’s the edit panel so you get an idea for what it can control:
You’ll note the controls don’t have the usual iPad look and feel which might bother some folks; my guess is that they had to make some compromises to squeeze so many options into limited screen real estate. You can get RAW files onto your iPad either via the iPad Camera Connection Kit or via iTunes sync, and piRAWnha saves the processed files out to the iPad’s photo library (so you can then share them via any of the export options).
I found the controls to work well, and I was able to edit RAW files with much greater precision and dynamic ranges than I could with their JPG counterparts.
piRAWnha can also edit JPG files, but what sets it apart is the ability to do true raw processing in the field. I’m a fan.
Buy piRAWnha in the iTunes App Store (current price is $5.99).
