A Rental Resolution

by Aaron Hockley on January 3, 2011

It’s the time when folks are making goals for 2011. While I’m sure you have various plans for the new year, might I suggest a goal that can fuel your creativity: rent a lens for something different than what you usually shoot.

I’ve become a fan of Camera Rental and Canon/Nikon Lens Rentals by BorrowLenses.com.

The Antmates Are Running the AsylumHere are some ideas:

  • Rent a wide-angle fisheye. Sigma has some super-wide lenses that are fun. I rented a 4.5mm fisheye for a Las Vegas trip – here’s one of the photos.
  • Rent a super-telephoto lens. If you’re not a serious wildlife photographer you probably haven’t been able to justify the cost of a 500mm prime, but renting one is a lot more affordable.
  • Rent some really-fast glass. Are you used to shooting around f/4? Rent a 50mm f/1.2 lens and enjoy that bokeh.
  • Rent a new camera body. Wondering if the Nikon D7000 is all the hotness that it claims to be? Curious if the swing-out screen on the Canon 60D is useful? Rent a body for a few days and try it out!
