Questions Asked by Amateur Photographers

by Aaron Hockley on November 1, 2010

Spun light at the carnival at Portland's Rose FestivalAs a photographer, I often get asked questions by folks who are either new to photography or getting back into the hobby for the first time in the digital realm. A few of the questions I see:

  • What’s the best post-processing software? Do I need Photoshop?
  • Which DSLR should I buy?
  • What lens(es) should I get with my new DSLR?
  • Where should I post photos online? Facebook? Flickr? Somewhere else?

What other questions do you have? I’m going to be answering the questions above (along with ones submitted here as comments) in the coming weeks on this website and I want to help you. Let me know what you’re wondering about…

So – how do you get a mentor? Can you just approach someone locally and ask “hey, can I follow you around?” I don’t need to know all the ins and outs, and I really wouldn’t consider myself as competing for their business – and I realize that some business advice should be paid for. But I want a knowledgeable friend. I want someone who I think is just outstandingly awesome to look at my work and give me pointers. I want someone to encourage, discourage…..I want a Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson rolled up in one….”Hey, dawg, that was good…but really, its like on the level with the guy taking pictures in front of the Easter Bunny in the mall.” How do I find one of these?

Hm, good topic I hadn’t thought of that one. I’ll put it on my list of things to address. Thanks for your comment!
