Do You Advertise That You’re a Christian Veteran Vegetarian Photographer?

by Aaron Hockley on August 6, 2010

Recently I was reading the “About” page on a pro photographer’s website and in the very first sentence she described herself as married to her husband and that they “love the Lord with all our hearts.”

Springtime at the ChurchAs someone who isn’t religious, this got me to thinking a bit about such information on photographers’ websites. Should one include things like religion or other lifestyle choices as part of their online presence and pitch?

On one hand, I’m sure that revealing such information might help establish a connection with certain clientele who may select a photographer whose values and lifestyle is similar to their own. On the other hand, there are some who might find such information irrelevant and wonder why it was included. Some might even be offended if the position is contradictory to one’s own.

I don’t see this as an issue where there’s a “right” or “wrong” answer, but more one of personal comfort and marketing skill.

How much do you reveal?

Hi Aaron, great question. I tend to share information that is directly relevant to the business at hand: education, experience, how long I've lived in the community, vision and mission. While I am religious I don't talk about it on my website because I would rather my worldview inform how I conduct business and treat others, as opposed to using those relationships and platforms to advertise my beliefs. This leads me to the age-old adage, “there are two things we don't talk about: religion and politics.”

I'm glad that you are asking tough questions Aaron, and can't wait to see what else you have to say! Have fun in Vegas!

I do not mix business with religion. In fact, I feel proclaiming one's religion is completely irrelevant to business. There are two companies in town who do questionable quality work but they have an ixthus on all of their trucks.
